In the mountains at the southern tip of the country, adjacent to the border with Slovenia, lies the province of Steiermark. Here, a man built a vineyard from scratch in a place where no pesticides had been used for 80 years! His name is Andreas Zeppe. His wines, with their impressive insect etiquettes, are now the focus of much attention at RAW, the annual Vin Naturel festival held in London. The wines have a unique energy that is etched into the palate from the moment the wine enters the mouth. [A man in pursuit of genuine nature.] Austria boasts the highest percentage of organic farmland in Europe, making it the world's number one "natural wine" country. However, many producers use a method called KIP, which is the equivalent of reduced rut-lesion farming, and it is difficult to say whether it can be called natural farming or not. Andreas Zeppe planted the first trees in the village of Reuhashat in Steiermark near the Slovenian border in 2006. He said, "If you spray the land with pesticides even once, the memory of it is imprinted on the land. That's why I only plant grapes on land that has never had any chemicals in it in the past." The land is no-tilled, and no branches are cut, no bunches are dropped, and no green pickers are used. Bad grapes are thoroughly cut off in the vineyard and transported to the cellar so as not to carry bacteria into the cellar. [About the soil] The soil is a solidified lime, unique to the Steiermark, and is called opoc soil in this region. The terraced vineyards are the only ones in the Opoc region that have terraced vineyards. The terraced vineyards are soft and even more energetic because the terraces allow the vineyards to be worked without stepping on the soil. He is truly a "real" natural Austrian producer!
