Bold, subtle, Luca Riefel! Riefel, which began bottling in 1946, owns a total of 9.5 ha of vineyards in Mittelbergheim and the neighboring towns of Baar and Andlow. The owner, Luca Riefel, trained in Alsace, Burgundy, and Germany, and in particular learned a great deal from his fellow countryman, the brilliant Andre Ostertag. In 1996, Luca was entrusted with the domaine by his father, and gradually adopted organic farming methods. The wines are fermented with natural yeasts in traditional foudres and stainless steel tanks, and aged on lees for a long time in order to give the wines complexity and minerality. The winemaker has a close relationship with other nearby producers, such as Antoine Kleidenweis of Marc Kleidenweis and Jean-Pierre Rieche, who inspire and enhance each other's work.
